Martina Mueller

Martina contributed an article to RAG 3.2 on the Romans in her native Switzerland.

"It was an amazing experience to travel through Europe and to visit almost 20 archaeological sites! Despite the fact that I had to wear winter clothes most of the time it was a pleasure to explore reconstructed Roman architecture in seven different countries. With the support of the Don Boyer Roman Archaeology Travel Scholarship I was able to investigate various types of replicas in completely different environments. They ranged from a reconstructed section of Hadrian's Wall in the English countryside to a recreated Roman villa in the urban context of the French city of Lille. Especially interesting were sites with "working replicas" of Roman taverns where it was even possible to do some very practical research on the use of Apicius' recipe for tasty Lucanian sausages! I am very grateful for having received this scholarship and would like to thank everyone involved."

Martina in winter 2007 happy to have finally reached Vindolanda, after a long walk from Bardon Mill train station (UK). In the background the reconstructed section of Hadrian's Wall.

Part of the reconstruction of the Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana (Xanten, on the Lower Rhine in Germany), one of the more important sites on Martina's itinerary in 2007.
